How To

How to read engineering diagrams

Engineering drawings provide a visual description of an object. There are many elements in these drawings such as text, dimensions and symbols. Engineering drawings are a common feature since ancient times. In Egypt 3000 BC, the first drawing was created. These drawings are used by engineers to create objects such as bridges, buildings, and machines.

Engineers use engineering plans to describe how something looks. This makes it easy for others to understand your message. Engineers draw things out using symbols and numbers to show measurements. This makes it simpler for people who don’t understand engineering.

There are two main types, 2D (or 3D) of engineering drawings.

2D drawings are flat representations for three-dimensional objects. These can include sections, elevation views, plans, and axonometric projects.

3D drawings represent real-life objects with multiple angles. They are most often created with computer software. For example, if you wanted to see what a bridge looked like from above, you could put the model into a program called SketchUp. After selecting "View", you would choose "TopView". You can then rotate your view until everything is visible from above.

2D drawings are best viewed as a whole. Do not focus on one aspect. Make sure to notice important parts in the upper right corner.
