How To

How to read engineering plans

Engineering drawings offer a visual description for an object. They contain many elements such as dimensions, symbols, text, etc. Engineering drawings have been around since ancient times. The first known drawing was made in Egypt during 3000 BC. Engineers use them for designing objects such as bridges, machines, and buildings.

Engineers use engineering drawings when they want to explain what something looks like. This helps others to understand what you are talking about. Engineers make things by using symbols and numbers to measure. This makes engineering easier for those who don't have any knowledge.

There are two main types: 2D or 3D.

2D drawings are flat representations for three-dimensional objects. These include plans, sections and elevation views.

3D drawings can be used to show real-life objects at multiple angles. These drawings are often created using computer software. For example, if you wanted to see what a bridge looked like from above, you could put the model into a program called SketchUp. Next, choose "View" and "Top View." You can then rotate your view until everything is visible from above.

2D drawings should be viewed in the entirety. Focus on the whole picture, not just one section. Be sure to look at the entire area, even if it is just in one corner.
